Whats on

AGE~LINK is an intergenerational project initiated by Blanchardstown ARA in 1990 to create better understanding between young people and older people and so promote a more positive image of retirement and ageing.

AGE~LINK was adopted as a national project by the Federation of Active Retirement Associations.

AGE~LINK was selected by the European Commission in 1993 as a model for inclusion in European networks. A Blanchardstown delegate went to Brussels to explain the scheme.

AGE~LINK has been organised by BARA in various ways, all designed to promote formal and informal dialogue with groups of students in the age group l6+ [i.e.Transition Year], for example:

• Debate, using a panel of "teenagers" and "thirdagers" speaking on a selected theme, followed by a general discussion.

• Open Day - students came to a regular session of BARA to take part in the sporting, etc., activities.

• Musical Exchange: Young and older put on a programme of music, singing, poetry and dance.

• Cards: BARA members visit a school and play various card games.

• School Radio: BARA members were interviewed on school radio about their lives and schooldays (relayed to all students)

• Arts/Crafts: Exhibition exchange

• Poster/ Slogan Competition: Competition in local Primary schools on theme of Grandparents.

* Grandparents Day: Involvement with Castleknock Community College on annual basis.
