An independent body providing a network of service organisations dealing with older people and promoting better policies and services for them.

Main aim: To improve the quality of life of disadvantaged and vulnerable older people.

Main aim: Age & Opportunity is the national agency working to challenge negative attitudes to ageing and older people, and to promote the participation of older people in society.

It receives funding from the Dept. of Health and Children and from the Arts Council.

Activities: Founded in 1988, the Agency has developed a wide ranging work programme covering: Arts, Education, Health, Publications, Public Libraries, Media and Europe. In the area of Physical Activity, it initiated the Go for Life programme. It organises the Bealtaine festival in May each year promoting "Creativity in Older Age"

Main aim: It is a national voluntary and membership based organisation,of older citizens.It seeks to serve as a voice for older people, to campaign on their behalf and to provide an opportunity for debate and action.

Activities:Produces a newsletter "Getting On". Networks with trans-national projects within the European Union.
 

GO FOR LIFE

Main Aim: Go for Life, on behalf of Age & Opportunity, is responsible for the National Programme for Sport and Physical Activity for Older People. Its objective is to increase the involvement of older adults in physical activity, not only participating but also in planning and leading sport in their own groups.

Activities:  It is supported by, and works with, the Irish Sports Council and is funded by that body. Active Retirement is represented on its Steering Committee. The campaign is promoted through workshops delivered by Physical Activity Leaders (PALS) in co-operation with Health Boards, VEC's and Local Sports Partnerships. The Dept. of Arts, Sport and Tourism is currently awarding over E 300,000 per annum in grant aid and this is administered by the Steering Committee. About  625 groups, including Active Retirement groups, received grants last year.

Main Aim: To represent the interests of older people and to lobby for change.

 

Activities: Research. Makes pre-Budget submissions. Many age organisations are affiliated to it.


 

NATIONAL COUNCIL ON AGEING AND OLDER PEOPLE

Main Aim: To promote the health, welfare and autonomy of older people and to advise the Dept. of Health on such issues.

 

Activities: The Council is a statutory body. It undertakes various research projects and has produced a wide range of valuable reports.

Main Aim: To share interests, be a voice for older women and influence policy- making.

 

Activities: Organises seminars and workshops on various projects, including cross-border activities funded by the Programme for Peace and Reconciliation, also projects funded by the Combat Poverty Agency.
