Minutes of the Dublin 15 Environment Group Meeting

Date: Tuesday 11 January 2006

Time: 7pm

Present: Monica, Maria, Maeve, Frédéric

Absent: Petrina, Valerie, Deivis

The main order of events was a review of last year and plans for the next year.

Review

Events:

Seed Distribution Day: This went very well but was a bit late in the year for planting seeds. Will try to do it earlier next year and maybe tie in with a hanging basket workshop.

Composting Workshop: Had a very low turnout despite good advertising, and most of those who attended were already composting, but running into problems. We conclude that at this stage those who compost, compost. We will not hold another workshop but may put something about it on our website. Hopefully a video clip of what it actually looks like.

Bonsai Workshop: This was very successful and those who attended wanted to know when the next one would be. So we want to do it again.

Energy Talk: While very enjoyable on the night, we didn’t sufficiently advertise. Needs to be more organised next time and more aimed at the average d15 homeowner – i.e. semi-Ds and appartments, not new builds.

Christmas: The library was totally empty that week, although the centre was full. Will try to do in the centre next time, or instead hold an advertised workshop on making eco-type christmas decorations, as done in the organic centre.

Overall we conclude we may need to do fewer events properly and that an average event takes closer to 2months, not the 1 we gave ourselves last year. Maybe pair up on particular events so that we can work in parallel on multiple projects. We should also try to hold them in the middle of the month to maximise the advertising power of the Community Voice.

Provisional Objectives for 2006

As we were missing members we only made provisional objectives. May be too much/may be missing other ideas etc. Highly subject to change.

Set up Website. Frédéric is already on the ball with this and will email his plans to the rest of the group.

Energy workshop. Best in winter, but not just before christmas! Maybe October.

Seed Distribution & Hanging Basket workshop. To include representives from local estate/appartment residents assocations. April seems best month.

Monitor planning applications made to Fingal CC which affect d15. Maeve will start doing this.

Put a plaque by the tree the group planted a couple of years ago

Sponsor the landscaping of a roundabout.

Do something for World Enviroment Day.

Plant something in the Tolka as part of the Tolka Renewal scheme. Possibly involve local schools/youth groups. Preferably in March to conicide with national tree week.

Lobby fingal co.co re the level of light pollution from the roads, which is interfering with the birds – singing all night. Lights should be facing down, as they do in the Blanch Centre.

Put a piece in the Community voice very 2 months.

Bonsai Workshop

Meet with Gerry Glabbe again re. Heritage plan – see if there is any tangible related project we could be involved in.

Any Other Business

1. The frog population is under extreme threat worldwide, chiefly due to a spreading disease but also loss of habitita. D15 has 3 golf clubs which could potentially help stem the loss by making their pools/rough areas ‘frog friendly’. Or maybe the amount of chemicals they use makes this unfeasible. We may try to meet with the grounds-people of the clubs. Maeve will do some more research.

2. Need to know the money status – how much left, did we get money this year, do we have to give back un-spent money of last year etc.

3. We need more T-Shirts

4. ENFO Calenders – Maria will ask them about this.

The proposed date for the next meeting is Monday 23rd of January. No room was booked.
