Mountview / Blakestown Community Drug Team

'Mountview/Blakestown Community Drug Team will work with drug users, their families and the community, using a community development approach to provide quality professional services which will support people in moving towards a drug free lifestyle'.

Since its incorporation in 1998, Mountview/Blakestown Community Drug Team has operated within the broad remit of providing quality, professionaly support services to drug users, the families of drug users and having involvement in education and prevention work within in the community.  Over the five year period 1998-2003, the project has consistently worked side by side with other local groups and organisations, developing joint services when appropriate whilst maintaining independence relative to the specific needs of the communities being catered for.

The underlying ethos of the CDT's work is based upon the following principles:

  • People have the right to respect, regardless of gender, class, age, religion, race, ethnic orientation, membership of the travelling community, disability or sexual orientation.
  • People have the right to professional, quality services.
  • People have a right to identify their own needs or to participate in work for change on their own behalf.
  • People have a right to be listened to.
  • People who avail of the CDT services and staff who work with the Project are valued and respected at all times.

In order to build on the good work undertaken to date, the CDT is looking at developing our community based services, exploring the possibility of supported housing and residential rehabilitation and linking this into the development of employment opportunities for CDT service users.  Other areas of interest lie in the field of mental health and dual diagnosis, alcohol related problems and research into aspects of addiction that will yield information capable of influencing future service development and delivery.  Many of these potential areas of development will be undertaken in conjunction with other agencies in the area.

We are proud of the achievements to date and yet realise that in many ways we are only beginning to impact on the complexities of drug use within the communities we work for.  We have come a long way since 1998 and will continue to hold true to the principles and ethos that guide our work.  While the many issues and problems that we encounter are often serious and complicated, the simplicity of treating all people who use the project with respect and warmth must never, and will never, be forgotten.
