Opening Statement The task described in this publication is to obtain a certified measured length for each hole on the golf course, setting the 150 metre markers with accuracy and precision and checking that the hole itself is compliant. The first of these is a core requirement for the handicap system (see The CONGU Unified Handicapping System, 2004). This publication therefore limits itself to equipment that measures length directly. Global Positional Satellites (GPS) and laser systems measure time and calculate length so that length is not measured directly and these are considered non-compliant with the task. There are a wide range of instruments available to measure length but of these the measuring tape was selected and considered most suitable for the task of measuring the lengths involved on a golf course.. 100 metre Open Frame Fibreglass Measuring Tape Certificate for tape (ESSENTIAL). This certificate will be supplied by the manufacturer and should indicate that the EU Tolerance for Class III Fibreglass Measuring Tape is 40.6 mm at 100 metres with a traction force of 2N (2kg) at a reference temperature of 20C or an equivalent certification. This certification is essential because it is this that enables the certification to be transferred to measurement made on the golf course. Using a tape without certification would be serious non-compliance. Fortunately tapes of this type are readily available in many good DIY stores and can be easily obtained. Quantity required = 2 (two) The task of obtaining certified measured length can be carried out with one tape but it is a relatively slow process. Two tapes greatly speed up the operation. Stakes to mark 100m on a fairway (5 for each tape). An inexpensive 25 mm screwdriver in easy to handle and works well. Optional: A certified 150 mm Measuring Ruler (B.S. 4372,1968) or equivalent. This ruler should not be used on the course but used to certify a working ruler which is used to measure the characteristics of the hole on a putting green (diameter, depth and depth below rim) A robust strong notebook to make hand written records of measuring activities. A sturdy clip board to hold the appropriate measurement forms. Writing equipment. |
