This section outlines the procedures for obtaining [a]assessment of the holes on all putting greens,
[b]putting a metric pacing station in place.
Compliance of holes on putting greens
The Rules of Golf define the golf hole on a putting green as a hole with a diameter of 108mm which is at least 102mm deep and if a lining is used it must be 25.4 mm below the surface. No error of measurement is given but for this publication an error of 2% is assumed. A hole therefore with a diameter greater that 110mm would be non-compliant and golfers playing golf into such a hole would be playing noncompliant golf. It is the responsibility of the Measurement Officer to ensure that putting green golf holes are compliant. A small ruler calibrated in mm can be used for this purpose
Metric Pacing Station
Pacing as an aid to length estimation is widely used by professional golfers. This skill is rarely used by the average club golfer. This publication attempts to rectify this by offering a facility at the club, a Metric Pacing Station, where average club golfers can train themselves to pace in metres.
The Measurement Officer should locate a 10m length of closely mown surface near the club with a low traffic rate and place small markers at 1m intervals in a line down its length. By practising on this Pacing Station golfers will rapidly learn to pace in metres.
