"Addicts are not aliens from outer space, who have suddenly appeared out of nowhere. They are brothers and sisters, sons and daughters, our neighbours. As a community we need to take ownership of the issue, in a rational, democratic and peaceful manner." Greater Blanchardstown Response to Drugs
email-- gbrd@eircom.net Growing with the community THE SEEDS of GBRD - Greater Blanchardstown Response to Drugs were sown back in 1992, when a group of people working in their communities came together because of the increased availability of drugs. Information, education and training were quickly identified as crucially important. So the Community Awareness of Drugs primary prevention course, "Working Together" was delivered over a six-week period. This helped people gain the knowledge they needed to deal in a positive manner with the growing drugs problem.
The expertise and experiences of people active in the voluntary and statutory sectors was harnessed, bringing on board representatives from the youth, addiction, health, counselling, probation, and development services, schools, scout groups, the Gardai and others also gave their support .
That group was formally convened in January 1994 and evolved into The Greater Blanchardstown Response to Drugs - or - GBRD to give it it's handier title. From its inception in 1992, the organisation was the first community-based initiative around education, training and information to be delivered in the Greater Blanchardstown area.
The GBRD has delivered a number of services in the community, including:
• Education and Information •Research •Accessing Funding •Open Days •Seminars •Representation on the Local Drug Task Force •Networking with groups locally and nationally •Addiction service referrals •Family support referrals •Peer Support groups •Facilitation Service of Commemoration and Hope
Through facilitating a community development process we will support individuals and groups who wish to provide or are providing services for substance abusers and their families. This will allow community ownership of services being locally provided.
